THE MITHARSUU CENTER
FOR LEADERSHIP AND JUSTICE
Where ideas become plans and vision becomes strategy.
WHAT WILL IT DO?
The Mitharsuu Center for Leadership and Justice, named with a word that means “family” in Burmese and connotes “friendship” in Thai, will act as a catalyst for strategic organizing, movement building, and leadership development for future generations of earth rights activists and lawyers in Southeast Asia. Located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the Center will bring all of ERI’s programs for the Mekong Region together under one roof for the first time. Staff, students, partners, and alumni will have a central campus to live, learn, work, and gather, facilitating collaboration and galvanizing the earth rights movement.
WHY DO WE NEED IT?
Two decades after its start in a tiny office near the Thai-Myanmar border, ERI has grown into a global organization with over 60 highly skilled staff in four offices around the world. In Thailand, ERI’s physical space hasn’t kept up with the growth of the organization, leaving staff working out of multiple offices. The EarthRights Schools, both based in Thailand, have trained more than 300 students, resulting in a widespread network of dedicated and talented alumni who are leaders in their community organizations.
WHO WILL IT SERVE?
The Mitharsuu Center will provide critical space for bright young leaders from the most vulnerable communities to gain the tools and confidence to fight for their rights; a place for lawyers to collaborate and hold powerful actors accountable for human rights and environmental abuses; and a hub where activists build networks between global and local communities to challenge the most dominant governments and corporations in the world.
