Spread the word: $1 will be donated to EarthRights for every Facebook fan we recruit this week

In honor of Human Rights Day, an anonymous donor has generously offered EarthRights International a creative “matching” donation: we’ll receive $1 for every Facebook Fan (“Like”) we receive through the end of the week, up to $5000!

Update: We made it!

We reached our goal of 5000 Likes and earned $5000. Thank you to everyone!

What can we do with $5000?

If we reach our goal of 5,000 Facebook fans, we’ll receive a donation of $5,000! That’s about what it costs to put one of our EarthRights School students through a full year of our training programs in Thailand!

We need your help!

Please spread this message far and wide amongst your networks.
First, Like our page and we'll receive $1:

Then share our page on your Wall so your friends can take part:

By sharing it widely, you can make a much larger impact! Read more »

How many lawyers does it take...

You probably know a lawyer joke or two. It’s a profession that bears the brunt of more than its share of bad ones, usually based on the idea that the world would be better place if there weren’t quite so many lawyers walking around.

But you also probably know that, all around the world, there are lawyers who are doing work which is no laughing matter.  Read more »

Field Notes from Thailand: A Visit to Mae Sot

I recently returned to Washington DC from northern Thailand, where I coordinated and led our first Donor Inspiration Tour. During the buildup to the trip I was consumed by logistics, including everything from making hotel reservations and food arrangements to finding bug spray and rain ponchos for all our participants.  It took awhile for me to realize that, just like the rest of the participants on our pilot tour, this was my first time ever seeing ERI’s local work in the Mekong Region. I had no idea how much I personally would be impacted by finally meeting my colleagues who work tirelessly to improve the lives of all those in the Mekong Region, and by being exposed to the challenges they face. On Earth Day, An Overview of "Earth Rights"

Today is Earth Day. Maybe you've already read a few blog posts today about doing your little part: recycling, taking public transit, and turning out the lights. Or perhaps you've heard the sometimes cutesy, sometimes cynical retort: "every day is Earth Day." These are both important concepts (and, I must confess, I wrote a "do your part" post on Human Rights Day four months ago), but for those of us entrenched in the environmental movement, they are also both woefully unsatisfying. We work on deeply rooted, complex problems and, while consumer lifestyle choices play a role in these issues, tweaking our daily routines won't solve them. These are problems that demand system change, and systems changes aren't easily reduced to bullet points. Read more »
