New Report: "The True Cost of Chevron: An Alternative Annual Report"

May 19, 2010
Tweet [1]

The True Cost of Chevron Network [2] is pleased to announce the release of the second annual, The True Cost of Chevron: An Alternative Annual Report [3]. This report examines Chevron’s impact on local communities, the environment, and exposes the oil giant’s corrosive efforts to undercut responsible climate and revenue transparency policies. The report — filled with the voices of local communities affected by Chevron — offers an alternative to the glossy images and statistics [4] the company presents to its shareholders that conveniently ignores the many harmful impacts of the company’s operations and polices.  ERI is pleased to contribute sections on Chevron’s operations in Burma and Chevron’s approach to revenue transparency.

What Chevron’s Annual Report does not tell its shareholders is the true cost paid for Chevron’s Way: lives lost, wars fought, communities destroyed, environments decimated, livelihoods ruined, and political voices silenced. Nor does it describe the global resistance movement gaining voice and strength against these operations.

Chevron faces one of the largest and most unique activist networks organizing against any global oil corporation. This network has been building for over a decade, becoming increasingly broad, coordinated, and unified. Over the past year, we have significantly expanded our reach into ever-more communities harmed by – and fighting back against – Chevron. They have come together to mount direct and coordinated challenges to Chevron’s policies and practices related to human rights, the environment, climate policy, public health, workers rights, and other critical earth rights issues/

Organizations including Amazon Watch, Justice in Nigeria Now, Global Exchange, Communities for a Better Environment, Rainforest Action Network, CorpWatch, EarthRights International, Crude Accountability, West County Toxics Coalition, Mobilization for Climate Justice-West, Filipino-American Coalition for Environmental Solidarity, the Richmond Progressive Alliance, US Labor Against the War, Direct Action to Stop the War, Cook Inletkeeper, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Coalition for a Safe Environment, Asian Pacific Environmental Network, Gulf Coast Sierra Club, Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services, Turtle Island Restoration Network, Environmental Rights Action, The Wilderness Society of Western Australia, and many more.

The True Costs of Chevron Network is also pleased to release a new series of advertisements [5] depicting the reality for the communities and environments impacted by Chevron’s operations. These ads counter the greenwashing [6] campaign launched by the 4th largest global corporation to misinform the public about the true costs of their operations.
