EarthRights International (ERI) is a founding member of the Oilwatch network. Headquartered in Ecuador, the network brings together human rights advocates, environmentalists, scientists, lawyers and indigenous peoples to monitor the petroleum industry worldwide. As the regional coordinator of the network in Asia, ERI organizes conferences and skillshares between diverse groups and individuals combatting the harmful effects of oil activities in their lands. From the dictatorship in Burma, to communist regimes in Laos and Vietnam, oligarchies in Malaysia and Singapore and a sultanate in Brunei, indigenous peoples' rights to participation and information are greatly limited during petroleum activities. And even in the infant democracies of Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines, pervasive corruption, weak court systems and decision-making processes support the petroleum industry's economic interests with correspondingly adverse impacts on the environment and the local people.
