Temporary position – 6 months (possibility of extension for 1 year depending on needs/performance) commencing January 2008

Position location – EarthRights Office, Chiang Mai, Thailand

EarthRights International (ERI) is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization that combines the power of law and the power of people in defense of earth rights. We specialize in fact-finding, legal actions against perpetrators of earth rights abuses, training for grassroots and community leaders through our EarthRights Schools, and advocacy campaigns. Through these strategies, ERI seeks to end earth rights abuses, to provide real solutions for real people, and to promote and protect human rights and the environment in the communities where we work. On the grassroots level, ERI focuses on campaigns in Southeast Asia, but also works internationally to expose abuses and devise strategies for their eradication. 

ERI has offices in northern Thailand and Washington, D.C.  The staff is ethnically diverse (evenly divided between people from the Global North and South), and is composed of lawyers, human rights and environmental activists, and experienced NGO workers.

The Junior Web Developer will be primarily responsible for building and maintaining a website for our EarthRights School Alumni Program and alumni organizations to share information with each other and within theirg rassroots communities. He/she will directly report to the Alumni Coordinator. 

His/her core responsibilities are:

  • Working in collaboration with various alumni organizations, the Alumni Coordinator, the EarthRights Schools Coordinator, the Executive Director and ERI's Communications Coordinator identify the needs to be addressed by the website
  • Develop, launch and establish the maintenance of a professional, intuitive, and user-friendly alumni website, to meet those needs
  • Utilize knowledge of web-based technologies and design related applications such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, FTP, Internet browser compatibility, PhotoShop, and Dreamweaver to complete duties
  • Develop code and web graphic images without supervision

Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience in website design, development, and maintenance
  • Excellent HTML programming required
  • Skills in CSS, HTML Editor: DreamWeaver, ColdFusion, Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Acrobat required
  • Some knowledge of JavaScript
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English, including the ability to comply with verbal and written instructions
  • Burmese, Thai or other regional/ethnic language capacities highly preferred
  • Ability to have courteous and professional interaction with a multi-ethnic/-lingual staff and ability to work with different cultures
  • Good problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Past experience working directly with a client at the client’s site
