The French oil company Total, who operates the Yadana gas pipeline project in Burma in partnership with Unocal Corp., has agreed to compensate the victims of forced labor and other human rights abuses associated with the project. Under a settlement, Total will pay a total of 6 million euros, or approximately $7.2 million, to compensate the victims and to set up a fund for humanitarian projects. EarthRights International filed a lawsuit against Unocal on behalf of victims of human rights abuses associated with the Yadana project, which culminated in a historic settlement earlier this year.
