Description and Purpose:
The purpose of
this position is to assist and encourage the participation of local community
leaders from Burma, the Mekong region, and the Amazon in international policy
and legal decision-making processes, and to fulfil ERI’s mission to raise local
voices and ensure that international campaigns for human rights and
environmental protection are led by those whose rights and environments are
directly affected by the decisions made at the international level. In addition to facilitating increased
participation of local leaders, this position will help leverage the collective
power of EarthRights
School alumni by
identifying, coordinating and implementing strategic collaboration across
borders on regional and global decision-making, laws and policies regarding
human rights and the environment. The International Alumni Coordinator is based in Chiang Mai, Thailand,
and reports to ERI’s Campaign Director.
Job
Responsibilities:
- Identify, assess and, meet the needs of EarthRights School alumni from Burma,
the Mekong region and the Amazon to
participate in and lead regional and international strategies and campaigns
-
Identify,
and provide alumni with, and/or assist alumni to themselves create,
opportunities for networking, information sharing, activism and training for
effective international
advocacy
-
Coordinate
and facilitate strategic advocacy campaigns between and among groups of alumni
working together and across borders to more comprehensively address regional
and international earth rights abuses and concerns.

Maintain
regular communications with EarthRights Schools Alumni Coordinators, and ERI
Campaigns team to keep abreast of alumni needs and concerns, and most
strategically and effectively provide support for alumni on international
advocacy.

Prepare alumni for
international advocacy initiatives through targeted training activities, and
when appropriate, to accompany and support alumni in the implementation of
their international advocacy strategies

Support and strengthen alumni
advocacy through reviewing, editing, and other means of supporting their
publications, speeches, media materials, websites, etc.

Work
closely with the EarthRights School Alumni Coordinators and other EarthRights International staff, to ensure that the overall
Alumni Program isective
and well-funded.

Oversee
and maintain accurate records of alumni contact details, activities, achievements,
needs and concerns relating to regional and international advocacy.

Gather
and organize resources, materials, information-sharing activities, including
conducting training for alumni accordingly by the need of international advocacy.
-
Ensure
that the various alumni initiatives are mutually supportive, not at cross-purposes
or repetitive.

Contribute
to strategic planning, work reviews, personal work reports, and evaluations of
program activities for alumni international
advocacy.

Organise
communication between all alumni, attendance at relevant conferences and workshops,
and identify other networking and capacity-building opportunities for alumni
for the purpose of international
advocacy.

Assist
in obtaining funding for alumni international advocacy projects, and in
monitoring the outcomes and reporting of such funding.

Write
regular reports on alumni activities, and participate in staff and project meetings
as required.

duties and activities, as needed and requested.
Selection
Criteria:
-
At
least 2 years of experience in international and/or regional advocacy, and
intimate knowledge and understanding of international and/or regional systems
-
At
least 2 years of experience in working on international campaigns, including
demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategic campaign
plans.

Ability
and willingness to undertake frequent international travel
-
At
least two years of experience managing or participating in networks or
coalitions of local, international, and/or regional NGOs, ideally those working
on issues relating EarthRights issues for alumni (Mekong, Burma,
and Amazon), sustainable development, human rights, and the environment.

Fluency
in English with excellent written and spoken communication skills, including
the ability to present complex information in a manner that is clear and easy
to understand.

Ability
to work with and understand ‘grassroots activists’ and what it takes to facilitate
their shift to international advocacy.

Ability
to respect and maintain security precautions for alumni working in dangerous or
politically sensitive situations

Commitment to supporting the vision
and mission of EarthRights International.

Must
be highly organised, with good attention to detail, a strong communicator, and
competent in the use of common software packages such as Word, Excel, and
Outlook Express or similar.

Familiarity
with subjects including human rights, conflict resolution, the environment,
law, women’s rights, corporate accountability, and the international political
system (i.e. UN , IFIs, ASEAN, etc.)

Experience
in organizational management, financial management and accounting.

Experience in organizing and delivering
training to non-native English speakers
-
Experience
of finding, monitoring and reporting on funding.
