Training

The EarthRights Schools work to create local human rights and environmental activists in Southeast Asia and the Amazon. The first EarthRights School opened in Thailand in 1998, the second opened in Ecuador in 2001. Both innovative programs provide rigorous training in human rights, environmental monitoring and advocacy techniques.

The Schools teach that earth rights promotion and protection are the cornerstones of democracy, which requires an engaged civil society to secure and defend these rights. Through the EarthRights Schools students gain specific knowledge and skills essential to the creation of a civil society, and take this knowledge out into their own communities.

By investing in students for the long-term, the EarthRights Schools help to create a corps of committed defenders of human rights and the natural world.

On July 15, 2008, the EarthRights Burma School celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2008 with a ceremony and party attended by many friends, supporters, and network partners.

The 2007-2008 EarthRights School Burma (ERSB) students ran a successful campaign as part of a course on strategic campaigns held at ERSB from July 1 to 3, 2008. Targeting the ERSB staff, the goal of the campaign – determined by the students themselves - was to create a process through which the students would contribute to the creation of the school’s curriculum for next year. The students reached an agreement with the staff for a meeting to be held on July 14, 2008, to discuss next years’ curriculum, and if this meeting is successful, the process of consultation will continue in the future.

The EarthRights School (ERS) - Mekong is a unique training program for activists from the Mekong Region (Yunnan/China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) whose work focuses on environmental issues and human rights.  The seven month-long training program uses experiential learning methods to equip participants from the region with skills required to conduct research, gather data, and effectively campaign around environmental issues affecting the region.  The training will take place in Chiang Mai, Thailand from June to December of 2009. Housing, transportation, and a modest living stipend will be provided to successful candidates.
