Advancing Corporate Accountability: ICAR's First Annual Meeting

Leaders in the field of corporate accountability gathered last week for the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable First Annual Meeting, co-hosted with the Human Rights Institute at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC. Participants from more than 30 nonprofit organizations and civil society groups discussed opportunities to promote robust frameworks for corporate accountability. Participants also worked to strengthen coordination across jurisdictions to reduce obstacles to justice and accountability for corporate human rights abuses.

Below are a few video highlights from the event, featuring ICAR's Amol Mehra, Chima Williams from the Environmental Rights Action and Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Ellen Dorsey of the Wallace Global Fund, and Dom Renfrey from the Australian Corporate Accountability Network.

ERI is on ICAR's steering committee, and several ERI staff members attended the meetings, including our Campaigns Director, Paul Donowitz, who co-moderated a discussion about strategic coordination. Our Legal Director, Marco Simons, co-moderated a separate discussion about the current litigation landscape pertaining to corporate accountability.

ICAR, launched in 2010, is a coalition of leading human rights organizations working at the nexus of business and human rights. ICAR works on key strategic campaigns, including conflict minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo, U.S. government civilian contractor accountability, and crucial anti-corruption legislation currently under attack in the U.S. Congress.

Look for ICAR to expand its membership and pursue new and innovate policy efforts to promote corporate accountability in the near future.
