Last week ERI submitted a letter to South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak urging him to reconsider Korea's involvement in two development projects in Korea and Burma due to potential human rights and environmental impacts. ERI believes the potential negative impacts of the Great Korea Canal Project disproportionately outweigh its expected economic benefits, and that the Shwe Gas Project will involve the violation of basic human rights. The letter supports the demands of the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements (KFEM) in regard to the Great Korea Canal Project; and also encourages the Korean government to respect human rights and the environment by taking action to suspend the Shwe gas project, which is led by Korea-based Daewoo International. For more information on the opposition to the Shwe gas project in Burma, see www.shwe.org.
