Celebrate American Democracy by Defending Rule of Law

“It is of high importance to the peace of America that she observe the laws of nations.”
John Jay, Federalist Paper #2

“… to the end it may be a government of laws, and not of men.”
John Adams, October 25, 1780

As our U.S. staff gathers once again to celebrate Independence Day, EarthRights International would like to take this opportunity to reflect upon one of the most important founding principles of America. The Framers of the U.S. Constitution understood the profound importance of law as the cornerstone of democracy. They understood that American democracy depended on placing a high value on a commitment to the rule of law. Equally important for the survival of the fledgling nation was the respect accorded to international law, which helped to guarantee peace and freedom. Samuel Adams once said that “we may look up to the Armies of our Defence, but Virtue is our best Security. It is not possible that any State should remain free, where Virtue is not supremely honored.”

Over the years ERI has tirelessly campaigned to restore respect for the law, including the human rights and environmental protections of international law. This July 4th, we renew our commitment to defend important laws like the Alien Tort Claims Act, and to ensure through our litigation against corporations that no entity—regardless of power or political influence—can operate above the law. We are grateful to our generous and loyal supporters, without whom we could not continue to fight for justice.
