Communications Internships (Social Media, IT, Graphic Design, Video Advocacy, etc)

PDF version

EarthRights International's Communications team accepts applications on a rolling basis for unpaid internships in our Washington DC office.

Our communications team provides online and offline communications and technical support to our campaigners, laywers and teachers as they work with affected community groups to prevent human rights and environmental abuses associated with large-scale development projects in Burma, the broader Mekong region, and the Peruvian Amazon. We design reports and other graphics, shoot and edit videos, write and photograph content for our website and social media, maintain servers and workstations, and more.

Responsibilities:

Instead of prescribing responsibilities and hoping to find the right candidate, our communications team is searching for exceptional talent and will adjust the responsibilities to best leverage your skills for ERI's work and provide you with a valuable learning experience. Depending on your background, here are some examples of tasks you may be asked to work on.

Graphic Design IT Video Social Media
  • Design infographics for ERI's website, publications, and videos
  • Revise email templates for our newsletter and fundraising emails
  • Implement a hardware asset tracking system and conduct an initial inventory
  • Assess and repair old PCs and accessories
  • Provide day to day tech support and work to improve our office network.
  • Storyboard and script ideas for upcoming informational videos
  • Work with our Communications & Campaigns teams to develop ideas and advocacy goals for future film projects.
  • Prepare DVD layouts for ERI promotional videos
  • Log and capture existing video footage
  • Implement our existing social media strategies
  • Research new tools and strategies
  • Draft and/or review posts for ERI's blog.
  • Select and post photos of our work on social media.

We also run a number of different websites and are building more, so web design and engineering skills (ideally with Drupal 6 or Drupal 7 experience), would be a very valuable addition to our team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in one or more of the following: social media, video advocacy, graphic design, web design, or general IT skills.
  • A demonstrated interest in human rights, environmental justice, and/or South East Asia or the Amazon.
  • A knack for Googling things that don't have Wikipedia pages.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work creatively and independently.
